Short answer
Buy a system, not a single roll: a self-adhered base sheet goes on the deck and a granule surfaced cap sheet goes over it, both from the same maker. These systems are made for low slope roofs such as porches, garages and sheds; GAF lists its Liberty system for low slope areas up to 3 in 12. Check the data sheet for the minimum slope and whether a primer is required, and roll every lap firmly.
How it differs from mineral roll roofing
Mineral roll vs peel-and-stick
| Mineral surface roll | Peel-and-stick SBS | |
|---|---|---|
| Attachment | Nails plus lap cement | Self-adhered to a primed deck |
| Slope | At least 1 in 12 by code; many wrappers 2 in 12 | Low slope systems; check the data sheet |
| Layers | One (or two with 19 in selvage) | Usually base sheet plus cap sheet |
| Life (estimates) | About 5 to 15 years | Up to about 30 years for modified bitumen |
| Skill | Basic | Basic, but laps and seams need care |

Options worth buying
-
01Top layer
Self-adhered SBS cap sheet
Best for: the weather surface of a low slope roof
- Surface
- mineral granules
- Polymer
- SBS
- Install
- peel and roll
- CertainTeed describes its Flintlastic SA Cap as a polyester reinforced SBS cap sheet used in fully self-adhered low slope systems (CertainTeed).
- Pick a color; light caps reflect more sun.
- Buy enough for laps: check the coverage on the roll.
-
02Bottom layer
Self-adhered base sheet
Best for: going under the cap sheet in a two ply system
- Surface
- smooth or film
- Role
- base or ply sheet
- Pair with
- same maker’s cap
- GAF sells Liberty as base or ply and cap sheets that install without torches, open flames or hot asphalt (GAF).
- Mixing brands can void the system warranty.
-
03Do not skip
Asphalt primer and hand roller
Best for: getting full adhesion on wood or concrete decks
- Primer
- as the maker specifies
- Roller
- steel or silicone hand roller
- Many systems call for primer on the deck; the data sheet says which.
- Rolling every lap firmly is what makes the seam.
Where it makes sense
- Porch and addition roofs tied into a house, where a nail-free field and a longer life matter. See garages and porches.
- Low slope roofs too flat for mineral roll roofing. See flat roof options.
- Sheds where you want a better roof than mineral roll and do not mind paying for it. See shed roofing.

Questions people ask
Is peel-and-stick roll roofing the same as ice and water shield?
No, though both are self-adhered modified bitumen. Ice and water shield is an underlayment that must be covered by a roof. Peel-and-stick roll roofing includes a cap sheet with a granule surface made to face the weather. Do not leave an underlayment exposed past the maker’s exposure limit.
Can I put peel-and-stick roll roofing on a flat roof?
Some low slope systems are rated for very low slopes, but no roof should be dead flat. GAF documents list its Liberty system starting at 1/4 in 12 in newer sheets and 1/2 in 12 in older ones. Check the current data sheet and make sure water drains off.
Do I need a base sheet?
Usually, yes. Most systems pair a base sheet with a cap sheet. CertainTeed notes two ply systems may suit small projects such as decks, additions and porches, and recommends three ply systems for larger roofs. Follow the maker’s system.
Does it work in cold weather?
Adhesion drops in the cold. Each product lists a minimum application temperature on its data sheet, and some makers allow cold weather installs with extra steps. Store rolls warm and follow the sheet.
How long does it last?
Hunker estimates modified bitumen roofing can last as long as 30 years, much longer than mineral roll roofing. Actual life depends on the product, the slope, the climate and the install. Treat it as an estimate.
