Short answer
Identify the membrane first: check the RV maker’s documentation or call with your VIN. As a field check, EPDM usually shows a black base under a white top at a cut edge and can chalk when rubbed; TPO is made not to chalk. Then buy sealant, cleaner and repair tape rated for that membrane. A full replacement is a membrane kit plus adhesive, sealant and a few helpers.
Which roof do you have?
RV roof types
| Roof | What it looks like | Care notes |
|---|---|---|
| EPDM | Flexible rubber; white top over a black base; can chalk | Use EPDM rated sealants such as Dicor’s lap sealants |
| TPO | Lightweight thermoplastic; made not to chalk or fade | Use only the sealants the membrane maker allows |
| Fiberglass | Rigid, often one piece, few seams | Sealants and coatings made for fiberglass |
| Aluminum | Riveted metal panels, older and specialty RVs | Metal specific sealants; watch penetrations |

Questions people ask
How do I know if my RV roof is EPDM or TPO?
Start with the owner’s documentation, or contact the manufacturer with your VIN. Camping World notes EPDM has a white top layer over a black base and chalks when rubbed, while TPO is made not to chalk. Looking at a cut edge under vent trim is a common check.
What sealant should I use on an RV roof?
One rated for your membrane. Camping World notes Dicor’s self-leveling and non-leveling lap sealants are rated for EPDM, and that Alpha Systems says only Alpha sealants may touch its TPO roofs. Standard silicone does not stick to TPO.
How often should I clean an RV roof?
Follow the membrane maker. Camping World reports Dicor recommends cleaning EPDM at least four times a year with a medium bristle brush, and Alpha recommends cleaning and inspecting its TPO roofs three to four times a year with plain soap and water.
Can I use house roll roofing on an RV?
No. Asphalt roll roofing is heavy, needs nails and a sloped deck, and is not made for a vehicle that flexes and travels. Use an RV membrane system.
